The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a four-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to commence the implementation of the newly approved salary structure for lecturers nationwide.

The union’s president, Christopher Piwuna, made this known on Thursday during a public lecture at Sa’adu Zungur University, Yuli Campus in Bauchi State.

He stated that the countdown takes effect immediately, urging the government to begin payment under the agreed salary framework without further delay.
According to him, “We have issued a four-day ultimatum from today to the Federal Government to begin the payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union.”
Piwuna explained that the demand is part of efforts to improve the welfare of lecturers and address the long-standing issue of poor remuneration, which he said has contributed to brain drain and the declining standard of higher education in Nigeria.
He further noted that although several agreements have been reached between the union and the government over time, implementation has remained inconsistent, often leading to disputes and industrial actions.
Observers have warned that the latest ultimatum could heighten tensions between ASUU and the government, raising fears of a possible strike if the demands are not met within the stipulated period.
ASUU has a history of embarking on nationwide strikes to press home its demands—actions that have repeatedly disrupted academic activities in public universities and affected millions of students across the country.
