JUST IN: Kachikwu Says INEC Chairman’s Exit Move Was a Direct Signal to Tinubu
The Daily Post reported on Friday, September 12, 2025, that Dumebi Kachikwu, presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the last general election, alleged that the outgoing Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof.
Mahmood Yakubu, used his final days in office to send a political message to President Bola Tinubu by recognizing the David Mark-led faction of the ADC.Kachikwu said he had long anticipated the development, describing it as Yakubu’s open show of disdain for the president.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Kachikwu faulted Yakubu for taking sides in the ADC leadership tussle despite ongoing court cases on the matter.
His comments came shortly after INEC formally recognized the Mark-led executives of the ADC by publishing their details on its official website.
Kachikwu strongly criticized Yakubu, calling him one of Nigeria’s most regrettable appointees and accusing him of leaving behind a “legacy of failure.”
According to him:
> “I still trust the Nigerian courts to resolve this matter fairly. Ultimately, the judiciary will determine how it ends.”
He further stated:
> “I never believed Yakubu would act responsibly on this issue. His tenure has been a monumental error for the country. Thankfully, his exit is near, and I am confident the judiciary will correct things.”
Kachikwu added that Yakubu’s actions were deliberate:
> “I knew that as the chairman was leaving, he was going to give the President a big middle finger and do anything to show his displeasure towards him.”
He concluded that Yakubu chose the twilight of his tenure to make this move, showing no regret or restraint, but that his departure has finally drawn the curtain on the controversy.
