Just in: No One Can Defeat Orji Kalu in Abia North; Even All LP Aspirants Combined Can’t Remove Him from Senate — Chijioke Chukwu
Hon. Chijioke Chukwu, the member representing the South East in the North West Development Commission and a former Minority Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly, has brushed aside claims by the opposition Labour Party that it can cut short the senatorial tenure of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North.
He described such claims as mere political posturing.Chukwu made the remarks while speaking on The Agenda, a political affairs programme aired on Don 103.7 FM in Umuahia on Wednesday, and monitored by MUK TV. He stated clearly that there is presently no politician with the political strength, influence and structure required to defeat the incumbent senator in Abia North.
MUK TV reports that tensions recently resurfaced between the media teams of Senator Orji Kalu and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti. In a statement that generated widespread reactions, the governor’s media aide, Ferdinand Ekeoma, claimed that the Labour Party has four strong aspirants ready to challenge and unseat the former Abia State governor from the Senate.
Reacting to the statement, Chukwu, an APC chieftain, insisted that even if all the Labour Party aspirants were combined, they would still be unable to defeat Senator Kalu.
“I have not seen any formidable opposition in Abia North that can remove Orji Uzor Kalu from the Senate,” he said.
“Every candidate the Labour Party has lined up against him, all of them put together, cannot defeat him.”
Commenting on the reported senatorial ambition of Rt. Hon. Ude Okochukwu, the immediate past Deputy Governor of Abia State, Chukwu cautioned politicians considering a challenge against Senator Kalu to rethink their plans.
“You don’t go to a lion’s battle with a sheep. He should drop the idea because he cannot defeat Orji Uzor Kalu,” Chukwu said, using a proverb to warn the Nkporo-born politician.
Although he acknowledged that he has had political disagreements with Senator Kalu in the past, Chukwu said his position was based on the senator’s extensive political network and his performance at the National Assembly. According to him, the Senate requires lawmakers with wide national connections who can effectively negotiate and attract federal projects to their constituencies.
On the aspiration of Chief David Ogba Onuoha, popularly known as Bourdex, to contest for the Abia North senatorial seat, Chukwu questioned his suitability, stating that the district does not require a “boxer” in the Senate. The remark was a reference to a reported incident in which the former Ohafia chairman allegedly assaulted a local government staff member.
Chukwu maintained that, for now, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu remains firmly positioned and unmatched in Abia North politics.
