Kalu Calls for Honest Reflection on Decades of Economic Policy Failures

Former Abia State Governor and Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has argued that corruption alone cannot be blamed for Nigeria’s economic difficulties, insisting that a series of collective decisions made over the past 66 years played a major role in shaping the country’s current economic reality.

According to Kalu, while corruption has undoubtedly harmed the nation’s development, it represents only one aspect of a much broader challenge.
He noted that years of policy choices, missed opportunities, weak institutions, poor planning, and a failure to prioritize long-term national development have all contributed significantly to the state of the economy.
The senator observed that Nigeria became excessively dependent on oil revenues while neglecting critical sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, technology, and industrial production. He said the country failed to build a diversified economy capable of absorbing global economic shocks, making it vulnerable whenever oil prices declined.
Kalu further stated that successive governments, political leaders, institutions, and citizens have all contributed in different ways to the economic conditions facing the country today. He identified poor investment in education, inadequate infrastructure, inconsistent economic policies, weak support for local industries, excessive dependence on imports, and a preference for consumption over production as major factors behind the nation’s challenges.
He also noted that several important issues are rarely discussed openly, including policy inconsistency that discourages investment, poor maintenance culture that drains public resources, and ethnic and political divisions that sometimes take precedence over competence and national interest. According to him, these problems have accumulated over many decades and cannot be resolved overnight.
Kalu stressed that economies are either built or weakened by decisions made consistently over time. He argued that Nigeria’s present situation cannot be attributed to a single administration, generation, or mistake, but is instead the outcome of countless decisions taken over many years, some of which were driven by personal interests rather than national priorities.
He maintained that acknowledging these realities is not about assigning blame but about learning valuable lessons from the past. The senator emphasized that meaningful economic transformation requires honesty, accountability, strategic planning, and a commitment to policies that encourage productivity, innovation, and sustainable growth.
Despite the challenges, Kalu expressed optimism about the country’s future, noting that Nigeria remains richly blessed with human and natural resources. He said the same collective strength that contributed to past mistakes can be harnessed to build a more prosperous future, adding that honest conversations about past decisions and future actions are essential to moving the nation forward.
