Katsina Power Capacity Gets Major Boost As TCN, Imcomtel Prepare 200MVA Transformer Installation

Preparations have intensified for the installation of 200MVA in new transformer capacity at the Katsina 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation, following a joint readiness inspection by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Imcomtel Engineering Limited.
The inspection, carried out on Thursday, September 24, 2026, was aimed at determining whether the substation and its supporting infrastructure were ready for the next major phase of the project.
The TCN delegation was led by the Assistant General Manager, Transmission, Katsina Sub-Region, Engr. Usman Idris, while the Imcomtel team was headed by Engr. Emmanuel Okafor.
During the exercise, the teams inspected ongoing civil works, equipment locations and other supporting facilities across the substation.
Particular attention was given to two 100MVA power transformers delivered to the project site on July 9.
The transformers, when installed and commissioned, are expected to increase the transmission capacity available to Katsina State and strengthen the wider North-West electricity network.
The teams also inspected four newly delivered control rooms, assessing their readiness to accommodate the protection, monitoring and control equipment required for the operation of the transmission facility.
The inspection provided TCN and Imcomtel with an opportunity to review outstanding technical requirements and identify the final preparations needed before the project enters its next installation stage.
At the end of the exercise, both parties aligned on the remaining technical and site requirements, with emphasis on coordination to ensure that the installation phase proceeds smoothly.
The project forms part of ongoing efforts to expand and reinforce Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure, particularly in areas where network capacity needs to keep pace with electricity demand and generation.
For Katsina and the surrounding North-West region, the additional transformer capacity is expected to provide greater flexibility within the transmission network and support improved movement of available electricity to distribution networks.
The inspection team also included TCN’s Principal Manager, Engr. Mustapha Idowu, and heads of relevant technical departments.
With the transformers already delivered and the control rooms in place, the focus is now shifting to final site preparations and installation as the Katsina substation project moves towards completion.
