A resident of Abia North has shared a heartfelt reflection on how Senator Orji Uzor Kalu profoundly shaped his childhood, influenced his values, and transformed his community.

Speaking with deep admiration, he described the senator as one of the most respected leaders to emerge from the region.

He said his respect for OUK began during his early school years.

He recalled a memorable incident when a young girl from his school wrote a letter to the then Governor of Abia State, pleading for the repair of the bad road leading to their school. In her letter, she explained how her stockings got soaked and dirty daily because of the deplorable road.

To the surprise of the pupils, OUK not only responded to the letter but also visited the school in person. During the visit, he presented each child with a mathematical set and a palm fruit seed. The seed he received was later planted in his family compound, and more than 24 years later, the palm tree still stands—yielding fruits used to prepare the Igbo delicacy ofe akwu. He described the thriving tree as a “living symbol” of the former governor’s impact on his life.

He further credited Orji Uzor Kalu for igniting his passion for football and for constructing many of the roads in his community during his childhood—developments that significantly accelerated the area’s growth.

He also recounted a conversation with a retired civil servant who praised OUK’s administration as one of the most worker-friendly in Abia State’s history. According to the civil servant, no worker was owed salaries, pensions, or gratuities, and during festive seasons, staff received welfare packages such as cars, bags of rice, and other items. He noted that no administration since then has matched that level of support.

Reflecting on OUK’s leadership, he expressed a strong desire to meet the senator someday and shake his hand in appreciation. He hopes to learn from him both personally and politically, acknowledging that OUK played a major role in shaping his early life.

Today, more than 24 years later, the palm tree planted from OUK’s gift still flourishes—just like the admiration and gratitude he continues to hold for the man who planted the seed in his life.
