NiMet, China Strengthen Partnership on AI Weather Forecasting, Early Warning Systems

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) have agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and early warning systems to improve weather forecasting and climate services.

The agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the Executive Council of the .

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, , who is also Nigeria’s Permanent Representative with the WMO, met with the Administrator and Director-General of the , , to reaffirm the longstanding partnership between both countries and identify new areas of collaboration.

During the meeting, both sides expressed commitment to advancing cooperation through the adoption and localisation of the MAZU AI Early Warning Platform for use in Nigeria, while exploring emerging artificial intelligence technologies to strengthen weather forecasting and climate services.

They also agreed to develop and adopt a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will provide a framework for collaboration in key areas, including the MAZU platform, staff exchange programmes, joint research, data sharing, remote sensing, aviation meteorology research, knowledge exchange and scholarship opportunities.

The proposed agreement is expected to deepen scientific collaboration between Nigeria and China while enhancing the capacity of both countries to deliver more accurate weather forecasts, effective early warning systems and climate services that support socioeconomic development.

The meeting reflects NiMet’s ongoing efforts to leverage international partnerships and emerging technologies to improve meteorological services and strengthen climate resilience in Nigeria.
