NiMet, Ignitia Begin Steps to Implement AI-Driven Weather Forecasting Partnership
By Iyojo Ameh
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Ignitia have commenced discussions on the implementation of their recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at deploying artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance weather forecasting across Nigeria.
A delegation from Ignitia, led by Mr.
Yen Choi, visited NiMet headquarters in Abuja on Thursday to initiate the process.Welcoming the team, the Director-General/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, reaffirmed the agency’s statutory mandate as Nigeria’s sole legal provider and regulator of weather and climate information. He assured that NiMet would continue to grant access and licensing to credible private-sector partners such as Ignitia in order to boost national forecasting capacity.
The partnership will focus on training NiMet personnel on AI-driven weather prediction and developing tailored advisories that will support decision-making across key sectors. According to both parties, the initiative is expected to improve forecast accuracy for farmers, strengthen agricultural productivity, and build resilience to climate change impacts.
As part of the implementation plan, NiMet and Ignitia agreed to establish a joint technical committee within the next month. The committee will design a roadmap detailing phased integration of AI-based forecasting tools, measurable benchmarks, and impact-tracking mechanisms.
The move marks a significant step in leveraging advanced technology to modernize Nigeria’s meteorological services and provide more reliable climate data to stakeholders nationwide.
