No Show at Abuja Stadium Raises Questions Over Bala-Led ADC Faction

The planned National Convention of the faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by Nafiu Bala failed to hold on Tuesday, as the Moshood Abiola National Stadium remained deserted despite prior publicity.

There were no signs of delegates, party officials, or any preparations at the designated venue, raising concerns about the viability of the event.

The no-show comes amid a worsening leadership crisis within the ADC. Bala’s faction had fixed April 21, 2026, for its convention, positioning it as a counter to a rival gathering organized by a faction led by former Senate President David Mark, which took place on April 14.
Bala has repeatedly rejected the convention conducted by the Mark-led group, describing it as invalid and in violation of a March 12, 2026 ruling of the Court of Appeal.
He had earlier argued that the absence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the rival convention signaled a lack of official recognition, insisting that such a process would not withstand judicial scrutiny.
The Bala faction continues to maintain that the Mark-led group acted outside constitutional provisions, further alleging that documents bearing Bala’s signature were forged to facilitate a takeover of the party’s leadership.
According to Bala, his faction remains the legitimate authority within the party, while accusing the opposing camp of bypassing due process in its restructuring efforts.
The dispute is still before Emeka Nwite, following INEC’s decision not to recognize Bala as the acting national chairman.
As of Tuesday afternoon, there has been no official explanation from Bala’s camp regarding the absence of activity at the stadium, leaving uncertainty over the faction’s next steps and leadership direction.
