PAP, AU Peace and Security Council Hold Joint Meeting to Boost Collaboration on Continental Peace Initiatives
By Iyojo Ameh
The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) and the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) have commenced a two-day Joint Consultative Meeting aimed at strengthening synergy and institutional collaboration to advance sustainable peace and security across Africa.
Themed “Enhancing Institutional Synergy and Collaboration for Sustainable Peace and Security in Africa,” the meeting brings together key stakeholders from both organs of the African Union to deepen mutual cooperation and operational alignment.
The primary objective of the retreat is to reinforce working ties between the PAP and the PSC by focusing on four key areas:
Strengthening Cooperation and Collaboration to promote a stronger mutual understanding of each institution’s mandate and operational frameworks. Enhanced communication and coordination between PAP and PSC are expected to improve the overall governance landscape and boost the impact of peace and security efforts across the continent.
Engagement in Conflict Prevention, Management, and Resolution, delegates are exploring structured mechanisms for joint engagement in conflict-related matters. A major focus is on identifying and developing collaborative strategies for conflict prevention, effective management, and resolution, including frameworks for post-conflict reconstruction in affected regions and sharing best practices using the retreat to serve as a platform for Member States to share experiences and best practices, with the goal of fostering collective learning.
This exchange is expected to sharpen the tools of both PAP and PSC in implementing effective peace and security interventions.
Also, advancing PAP’s Oversight and Advocacy role aimed to create institutionalized channels through which PAP can exercise its oversight and advocacy functions in relation to the implementation of AU peace and security initiatives.
This high-level retreat posited a growing recognition within the African Union of the need for integrated, collaborative approaches to tackle persistent security challenges on the continent. The engagement also aligns with the AU’s flagship “Silencing the Guns” agenda, a strategic effort to end all wars and prevent conflicts in Africa by the year 2030.
The retreat will conclude with the adoption of joint resolutions and a roadmap to guide future cooperation between PAP and the PSC.
