Residents living around Christ the King’s College (CKC) in the Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory have voiced deep concern over the surge in illegal mining activities in their community.

During a visit to the scene by our correspondent, residents lamented that the miners’ unlawful operations have been impacting their land and houses following the discovery of a precious stone—suspected to be gold—in one of the houses in the area.

They called on the Federal Government, particularly the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, to curb the activities of the illegal miners and explore ways to harness the suspected mineral resources for national economic growth.

When contacted, the Head of the Works Department, Gwagwalada Area Council, Alhaji Abdul Azeez, stated that the council had not yet received an official report on the illegal mining operations.

He assured that the council would convene a security meeting to address the situation.
