THE OTHER SIDE OF THE THRILL: HOW POWER BIKES ARE BEING USED FOR DRUGS, ARMS AND TERROR
By Sam Agogo
What began as a passion for freedom, adventure, and speed is slowly turning into a national concern. Once symbols of class, discipline, and unity, power bikes are now being mentioned in growing allegations linking some riders to the trafficking of drugs, smuggling of arms, and aiding criminal movements. While these reports remain unconfirmed, they have nonetheless sparked public debate about the integrity of the biking community and the need to protect its noble image.
We all must have seen power bikes racing through some of our major roads — their speed, thunderous sound, and sleek design catching attention. Many often fear for riders who zoom past with incredible velocity, unaware that most of these bikers are professionals in their various fields. Power biking has long been a popular hobby enjoyed by a diverse range of law-abiding citizens passionate about motorcycling for recreation, sport, and transportation.
Across Nigeria and other parts of the world, riding a power bike represents freedom, adventure, and the joy of the open road. It attracts professionals — engineers, doctors, lawyers, pilots, and entrepreneurs — who find in it a weekend escape from pressure and a therapeutic form of relaxation. It also embodies passion, friendship, and a deep sense of community among riders who see themselves as brothers and sisters united by speed, precision, and discipline.
But as beautiful as this hobby is, disturbing allegations have begun to circulate that some individuals have infiltrated the community, using the same machines that symbolize freedom as tools for illegal activities. There have been claims that a few riders use power bikes to transport drugs, arms, or to evade law enforcement due to the high speed and maneuverability of their machines. Security agencies in some states have reportedly intercepted motorcycles suspected of being used for criminal operations, although such cases represent only a fraction of the thousands of responsible bikers across the country.
Members of the biking community have, in several statements, distanced themselves from these allegations, insisting that their passion for biking is built on safety, discipline, and respect for the law. They maintain that those using motorcycles for illegal purposes are not part of their officially recognized groups or clubs.
Still, the allegations are enough to warrant concern. The bikers’ unions and associations must intensify efforts to identify and expel anyone tarnishing the image of this noble passion. It is also important for law enforcement agencies to collaborate with legitimate biker groups to ensure that genuine enthusiasts are not unfairly profiled or criminalized.
Power biking remains a respected and thrilling recreational activity — one that celebrates freedom, craftsmanship, and the human spirit of adventure. Those who abuse it for crime should be exposed and brought to justice, while the many professionals and responsible riders who truly embody the spirit of the road should continue to be celebrated.
