I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of Femi Jarrett, who died on 3 February 2026, at his residence in Lagos. With his departure, Nigeria has lost a dedicated theatre practitioner and a quiet but enduring contributor to our cultural life.

Femi Jarrett, popularly known as Alagbin in the classic television series The Village Headmaster, belonged to a generation of Nigerian artists for whom drama was both craft and calling.

At a time when theatre, radio, and early television were central to public discourse and popular education, he distinguished himself as an actor of range and discipline. His work on stage and screen was marked by clarity of expression, a fine sense of timing, and an instinctive understanding of character.

Beyond formal productions, Femi Jarrett believed strongly in the social purpose of the arts. He took performance beyond conventional venues, engaging communities and audiences who might otherwise have been excluded from cultural spaces. In doing so, he affirmed drama not merely as entertainment, but as a means of connection, dignity, and shared humanity.

On a personal note, Egbon Femi was more than an artist I admired from a distance; he was someone whose life and work resonated with me deeply. He was like a father figure to many of us—steady, principled, and quietly influential. He was also a rugged creative spirit, one whose commitment to his craft never wavered, even as circumstances changed.

Those who worked with him will remember his professionalism and calm authority; those who watched him will remember performances that felt authentic and humane. He did not chase acclaim, yet he earned respect. He did not seek the spotlight, yet his presence was always felt.

Femi Jarrett’s legacy lives on in the memories he created, the artists he influenced, and the body of work he left behind. Nigerian theatre and drama are richer for his years of service.

May he rest in peace.
