Why Opposition leaders storm INEC headquarters in Abuja.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) opposition leaders on Wednesday staged a protest at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging partisanship by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan.
The leaders were seen in a procession along the streets heading towards the INEC office located on Zambezi Crescent in the Maitama area of Abuja.
Among those participating in the protest are former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; the National Chairman of ADC, Senator David Mark; Peter Obi; Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; former Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola; Senator Dino Melaye; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal; and the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, alongside several others.
The development was disclosed through verified social media platforms of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who described the protest as peaceful and aimed at protecting Nigeria’s democracy while preventing what he called the emergence of a dictatorship.
He stated: “Myself and other leaders of the ADC are peacefully protesting against the partisanship of the electoral umpire. Our patriotic stance is aimed at safeguarding our democracy and preventing the enthronement of a dictatorship.”
Also part of the procession is a well-known activist and electoral reform advocate, Peter Randy-Akaah, joined by a large crowd of ADC members and supporters.
