As the world marks World Press Freedom Day 2026, the Nigeria Union of Journalists has called for stronger protections for media practitioners, while commending what it described as improving relations between journalists and security agencies in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on May 3 and signed by the president Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, said this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” reflects the critical role of journalism in fostering peace, strengthening democratic institutions, and ensuring accountability.

The union noted a “cautious optimism” over recent engagements between the Department of State Services and the media, citing a noticeable decline in cases of intimidation, harassment, and arbitrary arrests of journalists.

It commended the leadership of the DSS, particularly the Director-General, for promoting a more professional and constructive relationship with the press, describing the development as a positive step toward enhancing democratic accountability.

According to the union, the progress demonstrates that collaboration between security agencies and the media is essential in building a peaceful and secure society.

However, the NUJ warned that such gains must be sustained through continuous dialogue, transparency, and strict adherence to the rule of law, stressing that press freedom remains a constitutional right and a cornerstone of human rights and national development.

The union also urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to emulate the DSS by respecting the rights of journalists and creating an enabling environment for media practice.

Reaffirming its commitment to ethical journalism, the NUJ called on its members to uphold professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in their reporting, noting that responsible journalism is key to promoting peace and development.

“The media and security institutions are not adversaries, but partners in the collective effort to promote peace, protect human rights, and advance national development,” the statement said.

Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, also urged all stakeholders—including government, security agencies, media professionals, and citizens—to renew their commitment to safeguarding press freedom as a vital pillar for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
