Stakeholders in Nigeria’s media and security sectors have inaugurated a planning committee for the maiden Women in Security Summit 2026 and accompanying awards, in a move aimed at amplifying women’s voices in national security discourse.

The virtual meeting, convened by the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, marked the formal commencement of preparations for the summit scheduled for June 2026.

Speaking at the inauguration, NAWOJ National Chairperson, Aisha Ibrahim, described the initiative as a strategic intervention rather than a routine event, stressing the need to position women at the centre of security conversations.

“This is not just another event on our calendar. It is about ensuring women are present where decisions are made, policies are shaped, and the future of our nation is defined,” she said.

Ibrahim emphasised that NAWOJ intends to play a leading role in reshaping the security narrative, noting that security goes beyond military concerns to include the lived realities of communities, particularly women.

She added that the Women in Security Summit, also known as WINSEC, would serve as a platform to recognise excellence, promote competence, and redefine perceptions of women’s roles within Nigeria’s security architecture.

While urging members of the committee to approach their task with urgency and clarity, she warned that the success of the maiden edition would depend largely on execution rather than intentions.

Also speaking, the President of the NUJ, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, represented by the Assistant National Secretary and WINSEC Project Coordinator, Tita Onyebuchi Nze, said committee members were carefully selected based on competence and proven track records.

He charged the committee to explore all available avenues to deliver a successful and impactful event.

The summit is expected to provide a national platform for policy dialogue, while the Women in Security Awards will spotlight outstanding contributions of women within Nigeria’s security ecosystem.

With the committee now formally in place, work has commenced on developing structures, timelines, and deliverables aimed at ensuring the inaugural summit sets a benchmark for future engagements.
