Abia North: APC Chieftain Urges Ex-Deputy Governor Ude Oko Chukwu to Support Senator Orji Uzor Kalu in 2027, Not Contests
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Edward Kalu Okocha, has congratulated the immediate past Deputy Governor of Abia State, Rt. Hon. Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, on his recent defection to the ruling Labour Party but advised him against contesting the Abia North Senatorial seat in 2027.
In a statement released on Sunday in Ameke Abiriba, Okocha described Oko Chukwu’s defection as both bold and strategic, noting that his decision to join Governor Alex Otti’s Labour Party reflects his commitment to the growth of Abia State, particularly the Abia North Senatorial Zone.
However, Okocha cautioned the former Deputy Governor not to let the excitement of his new political move lead him into contesting for the Senate seat. He stressed that Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has already placed Abia North in a favourable position through effective representation and seniority in the National Assembly.
“Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has been doing an outstanding job in the Senate, attracting meaningful projects and empowerment to our zone. His legislative experience and seniority make him a strong contender for principal positions, including the Senate Presidency, which would be a game-changer for our people,” Okocha said.
Drawing from political history, Okocha recalled how he supported Oko Chukwu’s third-term bid in the Abia State House of Assembly in 2010 despite opposition from some quarters. He noted that the decision eventually paid off as Oko Chukwu facilitated key projects like the skill acquisition centre in Abiriba and later rose to the position of Deputy Governor.
“This same strategic thinking is required today. As we move towards 2027, Abia North will benefit more by rallying behind Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for re-election, thereby positioning him for greater responsibilities in the Senate. That is the surest path to unlocking more development and opportunities for our people,” Okocha emphasized.
While congratulating Oko Chukwu once again, Okocha appealed to him to put the collective progress of Abia North Senatorial Zone above personal ambition by supporting Senator Kalu’s re-election bid in 2027.
