2027: Former legislators’ national forum backs Tinubu’s re-election, endorses Barau for Kano governorship

Members of the National Forum of Former Legislators have declared their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term in office and have also endorsed the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by Malam Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, and made available to journalists in Abuja.

The endorsement was announced by the National Coordinator of the forum, which comprises former legislators at the federal, state, and local government levels, Hon. Raphael Nnanna Igbokwe. He spoke during a recent courtesy visit to Senator Barau at the National Assembly in Abuja.
According to him, the forum resolved to support President Tinubu to enable him to fully implement the various developmental programmes and reforms his administration has embarked upon over the last 30 months.
“We have come together as like-minded individuals who believe in this administration, and we have already taken a clear position as a parliamentary support group for the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In the same vein, we have aligned with our Kano State chapter, which has endorsed Senator Barau for the governorship race in Kano State,” he said.
On behalf of the forum’s convener, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Igbokwe also invited Senator Barau to attend the forthcoming National Summit on National Unity and Nation Building as a Special Guest of Honour. The summit is scheduled to hold on January 24, 2026.
In his response, Senator Barau praised the forum for transforming from an informal association into a structured and formal body of former lawmakers.
“This initiative is both timely and necessary. What you have done is commendable and worthy of support,” he said.
He added that this is a period when former members of the National and State Assemblies should rally behind the government to support the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, as he works diligently to restore the nation to the path of growth and prosperity.
