Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang Defects from PDP to APC, Boosting Party Presence in North-Central
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The governor formalized his entry into the ruling party on Friday during a stakeholders’ meeting, where he was presented with his APC membership card, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over his political future. The event drew prominent APC figures, including former Plateau State Governor and current Senator Simon Lalong, Senator Diket Plang, and House of Representatives member Yusuf Gagdi, among others.
Mutfwang’s defection follows his resignation from the PDP on December 29, 2025, in which he cited the need for a different political platform to advance purposeful leadership and effective governance in Plateau State. In his resignation letter addressed to the PDP chairman of his Ampang West Ward, the governor expressed gratitude to the party for allowing him to participate in the democratic process, but noted that prevailing circumstances necessitated his departure.
Although the letter did not immediately indicate his next political move, APC officials had confirmed ongoing discussions with Mutfwang ahead of his formal defection.
Following his induction, the APC National Working Committee welcomed Governor Mutfwang, describing his defection as a major boost to the party’s influence in the North-Central region. Party leaders at the meeting pledged their full support, assuring him of cooperation as he continues to lead Plateau State under the APC banner.
