The Nigeria Army has successfully organized a workshop aimed at enhancing cooperation between the military, media, and other security agencies to address the growing challenges posed by the digital media landscape.

The event, held at the Nigeria Army School of Public Relations and Information (NASPRI) in Giri, Abuja, brought together security and paramilitary representatives, media professionals, and online publishers.

The workshop, themed “Leveraging Digital/Social Media Influence for Effective Military Operations Within a Joint Environment,” was designed to explore how media can serve as a force multiplier in supporting military operations. It focused on strengthening the partnership between the military and the media to foster understanding, improve information management, and craft positive narratives to back national security efforts.

In his opening remarks, the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, highlighted the crucial role of the media in shaping public perception, particularly in an era where digital platforms often fuel misinformation and disinformation. He noted that while social media presents opportunities for the military to communicate its successes, it also poses risks by spreading false information that can undermine public trust and national security.

“The ability of some social media influencers to deliberately spread false or distorted information with the intent of misleading the public has become a significant threat to national security. It is imperative to counter these threats with accurate information and constructive engagement,” Maj. Gen. Nwachukwu stressed.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. O.O. Oloyede, emphasized the media’s pivotal role in supporting the Army’s constitutional duties and in promoting the nation’s security. He commended the media for their role in reporting the Army’s achievements and reinforcing the need to combat fake news to foster public confidence in the military.

“We rely on the media to shape public opinion and garner support for our operations”.
“It is essential that we develop positive narratives to counter misinformation and ensure that the public understands our efforts in safeguarding the nation,” he added.

The workshop also elaborated the importance of seamless collaboration between the Nigeria Army and the media in achieving national security goals. He reiterated the Army’s commitment to supporting civil authorities in maintaining law and order and emphasized the collective responsibility of citizens in sustaining peace.

Additionally, the Commandant Nigeria Army School of Public Relations and Information, Lieutenant Colonel Adamu Ngulde announced plans to modernize NASPRI, transforming it into a world-class institution aimed at equipping Army personnel with advanced skills to navigate modern media challenges.

The event called for enhanced cooperation between the military and the media to improve national security and promote public trust. The Army expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support, which has been instrumental in advancing the nation’s security efforts.
