Benue Commissioner Applauds Nigeria’s Return to IMO Council, Assures Benue’s Strong Participation
From Dooshima Terkura, Makurdi
The Benue State Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Denis Iyaghigba, has hailed Nigeria’s re-election into Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 term, describing it as “a historic breakthrough born of hard work, strategic diplomacy, and sustained advocacy.”
In a statement released to journalists on Monday, the Commissioner expressed deep satisfaction with the development, noting that Nigeria’s return to the IMO Council after 14 years is “a clear confirmation that the country has regained its rightful position on the global maritime stage.”
He stated that the achievement signals renewed global trust in Nigeria’s maritime administration, technical strength, and its capacity to engage effectively at the international level.
Iyaghigba commended the Minister for Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, for spearheading what he described as “a vigorous, expertly coordinated, year-long campaign involving strategic consultations, continuous advocacy, and focused shuttle diplomacy across maritime blocs.”
According to him, the Minister’s consistency and strategic outreach have delivered “one of the most remarkable victories for Nigeria’s maritime sector in recent times,” while also underscoring President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s resolve to position Nigeria as a competitive maritime power globally.
He emphasized that President Tinubu’s administration has continually promoted policies geared toward economic diversification, global cooperation, and the strengthening of maritime competitiveness. Iyaghigba expressed confidence that Nigeria’s renewed global relevance will benefit all parts of the country, including Benue State.
The Commissioner noted that under Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, Benue State is “working diligently to establish a distinct presence within the marine and blue economy landscape.” He pointed out that the Governor’s efforts align completely with the national agenda, reaffirming Benue’s determination to become “a model for subnational involvement in the blue economy.”
Iyaghigba further stated that Nigeria’s reinstatement into the IMO Council will open doors to increased investment, enhanced maritime safety, stronger environmental safeguards, and broader economic opportunities for states and communities across the federation.
