The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, the world’s highest, officially opened on September 27, 2025, in China’s mountainous southwest Guizhou province.

Officials hailed the project as a landmark feat of engineering that will make “enormous improvements to regional transportation conditions and inject new impetus into regional economic and social development.

China has poured massive investments into infrastructure over the past decades, fueling rapid economic growth and urbanisation. Guizhou, a hilly province long challenged by difficult terrain, is now home to thousands of bridges — including the world’s two highest.

According to state news agency Xinhua, nearly half of the world’s 100 tallest bridges are located in the province.

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, with a 1,420-metre main span, took more than three years to build and is recognised as the “world’s largest-span bridge constructed in a mountainous area.”

While the bridge now holds the record for the highest in the world — measured by the distance between the bridge deck and the ground — the tallest by structural height remains France’s Millau Viaduct at 343 metres.
