Defections Strengthen APC Ahead of 2027 Elections — Barau
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has officially received former Kano State Governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, alongside former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Both seasoned politicians recently exited the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State, attributing their decision to ongoing internal leadership crises within the opposition party.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Senator Barau described the development as a major boost to the APC’s strength and electoral prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“I warmly welcome the former Governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, and former Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, to the APC, the largest political party in Africa. These accomplished politicians are genuine progressives, and the APC is their rightful political home. Progressive leaders naturally align with a progressive party,” Barau stated.
Senator Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, expressed optimism that with continued grassroots support in Kano State, the APC is well-positioned to secure victories in the presidential, governorship, and legislative elections in 2027.
He added that the increasing wave of defections from opposition parties into the APC reflects growing public confidence in the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kano State Governor, Engr Abba Kabir Yusuf.
