Democracy Day: Lawmaker Reaffirms Commitment to Justice, Unity, Good Governance
The member representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep. Peter Uzokwe, has called for unity, reconciliation and collective action among political stakeholders as Nigeria marks Democracy Day.
In a Democracy Day message addressed to constituents, the lawmaker described June 12 as a celebration of the people’s voice, power and enduring faith in a better future, while expressing gratitude for the support he has received from residents of the constituency.
Uzokwe, who recently emerged from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) primary election, thanked constituents for their trust and confidence, assuring them that he remains committed to effective representation and development-focused leadership.
He also paid tribute to members of the NDC, commending their dedication and grassroots mobilization efforts, which he said had sustained the party’s vision and strengthened democratic participation at the community level.
“I extend my heartfelt thanks to the dedicated members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress. Your passion, tireless grassroots mobilization and unwavering belief in our shared vision have been the driving force of our journey,” he said.
The lawmaker used the occasion to reach out to fellow aspirants who contested the party’s primary election alongside him, describing them as partners in progress rather than political rivals.
According to him, primary elections should be viewed as democratic family contests aimed at strengthening the party rather than creating divisions.
“To my respected brothers and colleagues who contested the recent NDC Primary election with me, I salute your courage, your vision and your deep love for our constituency. A primary election is not a war; it is a family contest. Every single one of you brought invaluable ideas to the table, and our democracy is richer for it,” he stated.
Uzokwe stressed that there should be “no victors and no vanquished” after the contest, urging all stakeholders to unite behind the common objective of advancing the interests of Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency.
In a move aimed at fostering reconciliation, he disclosed plans to personally engage all former contestants in the coming weeks to address concerns arising from the primary election process and strengthen collaboration ahead of future political engagements.
He said their contributions and perspectives would be vital in delivering the quality representation and development expected by the people.
“As we celebrate today, let us renew our commitment to peace, unity and mutual respect. The task ahead is enormous, but with your continued support, I am confident that we will usher in an unprecedented era of human capital development, infrastructural growth and effective legislation that directly impacts your lives,” he added.
The lawmaker reaffirmed his commitment to promoting policies and legislative initiatives that would improve the welfare of constituents, accelerate infrastructure development and create opportunities for economic growth across the federal constituency.
Democracy Day is observed annually in Nigeria on June 12 to commemorate the country’s democratic journey and honour the sacrifices of those who fought for democratic governance.
The day also serves as a reminder of the importance of citizen participation, accountability and national unity in sustaining democracy.
