FG Reassures Benue Residents of Stronger Security Measures After Recent Attacks
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement for the North Central, Abiodun Essiet, has reassured residents of Benue State that the Federal Government is taking decisive steps to restore peace in communities affected by recent violence.
Essiet gave the assurance on Friday during a visit to communities in Kwande Local Government Area, which recently witnessed attacks that displaced residents and heightened security concerns.
She explained that the visit formed part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to evaluate the situation on the ground and ensure that the concerns of affected communities are communicated directly to the Presidency.
According to her, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fully aware of the situation in Benue State and remains committed to addressing the security challenges confronting residents.
Essiet stated that before the visit, she held consultations with officials of the Department of State Services and the leadership of Operation Whirl Stroke, where issues relating to delayed security response and concerns raised by local communities were discussed.
“They briefed me thoroughly and explained the circumstances surrounding the situation. We understand how painful and difficult this moment is for your communities. My visit today is to personally observe what is happening and ensure that your concerns are accurately relayed to the President,” she said.
The presidential aide also reassured residents that the Nigerian Army remains neutral and committed to protecting lives and property.
“I want to assure you that the military will always remain impartial. They are dedicated to safeguarding citizens and will not support or arm any group. I urge everyone to remain patient as the government continues to strengthen security measures in the area,” she added.
Essiet noted that her visit to the affected communities was aimed at documenting their grievances and presenting them directly to the President, adding that improvements in the response and performance of security agencies would soon become evident.
Beyond security issues, the presidential aide also addressed matters relating to natural resource management in the area. She assured that the concerns of host communities regarding mining activities would be forwarded to the appropriate federal authorities.
She emphasised that both the federal and state governments must collaborate to ensure that natural resources are managed in ways that benefit local communities.
According to her, legitimate mining operations and corporate social responsibility initiatives should focus on empowering residents, supporting education, developing infrastructure, and providing essential social services.
Essiet further explained that the Federal Government plans to strengthen collaboration with host communities to ensure that such benefits are effectively delivered.
She added that the visit formed part of a broader national strategy that led to the establishment of the Community Engagement Office by the President to enhance communication between government institutions and citizens across the North Central region.
The presidential aide encouraged residents to continue engaging with government representatives and to freely express their concerns.
“When you speak out, we are able to understand your challenges and take action. But when communication stops, it becomes difficult for us to respond effectively,” she said.
