Leadership Crisis: NNPP Calls on INEC to Respect Court Judgments
By Our Correspondent
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to comply with court judgments concerning the party’s leadership dispute.
Addressing journalists at a press conference in Abuja, the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Agbo Major, reaffirmed the NNPP’s commitment to democratic values and the rule of law.
He noted that various courts had delivered judgments regarding the leadership crisis within the party and expressed concern that INEC had not fully implemented the rulings.
According to Dr. Major, the party conducted its congresses and submitted all necessary documents to the electoral commission in accordance with court directives.
He explained that the party subsequently returned to court to seek enforcement of a judgment after INEC allegedly failed to carry out the ruling.
The NNPP chairman stressed that adherence to court orders is essential for strengthening democracy and enhancing public trust in the electoral system.
He also revealed that the party had engaged civil society organisations, diplomatic missions, and development partners on the issue.
According to him, the party’s concerns had been conveyed to stakeholders with an interest in Nigeria’s democratic progress.
Speaking on the 2027 general elections, Dr. Major clarified that the NNPP had not settled on a substantive presidential candidate.
He stated that consultations were still in progress and that the party would announce its position at the appropriate time.
Dr. Major also dismissed reports linking the NNPP to any political coalition ahead of the next election.
He said the party would continue to pursue its programmes independently while concentrating on preparations for future electoral contests.
The NNPP chairman urged all institutions and stakeholders to uphold the rule of law and support initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
He expressed confidence that the issues surrounding the party’s leadership would ultimately be resolved through legal and democratic means.
