No Preferred Candidate Yet, Wike Tells Rivers Stakeholders
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that he has not endorsed any individual for upcoming political contests in Rivers State, emphasizing that such decisions are the prerogative of party elders.
Wike made this known while addressing a joint meeting of stakeholders from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at his official residence in Life Camp, Abuja.
He cautioned against the haste for endorsements and warned that personal ambitions could lead to internal divisions within the group.
The Minister stressed that the group’s present political strength is rooted in unity and shared commitment, rather than financial influence.
He further warned that external forces are working to create divisions among stakeholders due to their successful collaboration.
“If we were not working together, if we were not united, it would be difficult. People are not happy that we are working together, so they will do anything to ensure we are divided,” Wike said.
Wike also expressed disappointment in some individuals who, after benefiting from appointments facilitated by the group, have turned around to criticize its leadership.
He described such actions as a failure of character and cautioned that those attempting to undermine others through deceit would not succeed.
“Woe be unto the person who, after being given an appointment, turns around to castigate the leadership,” he said, adding that many who once sought his mentorship can no longer face him.
Clarifying his stance on upcoming political activities, Wike dismissed claims of private endorsements for local offices, maintaining that his public and private positions remain the same.
He stated that the only endorsement currently recognized by the group is for the Presidency, noting that they have officially endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“Anything I say at night is exactly what I will say during the day.”
He reiterated that he has not endorsed any candidate at the state level for either the APC or PDP and will not do so until party elders meet to take such decisions.
Wike also commended the Council Chairmen, Rivers elders, and leaders of both parties for their coordination in assembling stakeholders, noting that the lack of complaints about inclusiveness reflected the success of the meeting.
