Och’Idoma Accepts Appointment as SWAN National Patron, Tasks Sports Journalists on Youth Development

The Paramount Ruler of the Idoma Kingdom in Benue State, the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty Agaba’idu John Odogbo, has formally accepted his appointment as the National Patron of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).


The acceptance ceremony held on Saturday, January 24, 2026, during a courtesy visit by members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of SWAN to the Och’Idoma Palace in Otukpo, Benue State.

While receiving the SWAN delegation, led by its President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, the Och’Idoma expressed gratitude for the honour and praised the Association for its more than six decades of impactful contributions to sports development, youth empowerment, and national cohesion since its founding in 1964.
The royal father described sports as a vital instrument for youth empowerment, social integration, and nation-building, stressing that the media plays a pivotal role in shaping values, motivating excellence, and safeguarding Nigeria’s sporting legacy.
He charged SWAN to intensify its advocacy for grassroots sports development, youth mentorship, ethical journalism, and policy reforms aimed at improving athlete welfare and sports administration in the country.
The Och’Idoma also called for stronger collaboration between sports journalists and traditional institutions to galvanize communities and promote peace through sports.
“I accept this appointment not just as an honour, but as a responsibility to support initiatives that advance unity, discipline, and excellence through sports and the media,” he said.
Earlier, SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, explained that the decision to appoint the Och’Idoma as National Patron was based on his proven commitment to peace, youth development, and national progress.
According to him, the Association looks forward to drawing from the monarch’s vast experience, moral authority, and leadership.
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria reaffirmed its dedication to professionalism, responsible journalism, and leveraging sports as a catalyst for positive social transformation nationwide.
Speaking at the event, the Secretary of the Idoma Area Traditional Council, Mr. Adegbe Uloko, said the visit concluded with the formal presentation of the letter of appointment to His Royal Majesty.
