‘One Battle After Another,’ ‘Sinners’ dominate 2026 Oscars [FULL LIST]
The 98th edition of the Academy Awards was held on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre, honouring the best films released in 2025 and announcing winners across several categories.
The ceremony was hosted for the second year in a row by Conan O’Brien and ran for about three hours and 45 minutes.
This year’s Oscars featured a stage designed with a garden courtyard theme and included live musical performances, among them “I Lied To You” from the film Sinners. The event also featured a tribute from Barbra Streisand to veteran actor Robert Redford, alongside the traditional In Memoriam segment. Security at the venue was reportedly tightened because of external threats linked to the event.
The night was largely dominated by two Warner Bros. productions — One Battle After Another and Sinners — which had competed fiercely throughout the awards season.
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, One Battle After Another emerged as the biggest winner of the evening, claiming six Oscars including Best Picture. The dark political thriller features Leonardo DiCaprio as a former radical entangled in a high-stakes chase.
Meanwhile, Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, won four awards, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, who portrayed twin brothers Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore in the vampire horror drama.
Although Sinners entered the ceremony with a record 16 nominations — the highest number ever for a film in Oscars history — it finished the night with fewer awards than expected. Nonetheless, the film still achieved several milestones and helped give Warner Bros. the lead among studios with a total of 11 wins.
Several historic moments also stood out during the ceremony.
Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first woman to win the Best Cinematography award for her work on Sinners. She also became the first woman of colour to receive a nomination in that category. During her acceptance speech, she asked all women in the audience to stand and expressed gratitude to the female support network that backed the campaign.
Another major milestone was the introduction of the Best Casting category — the first new competitive Oscar category added in 24 years — which was awarded to One Battle After Another.
For Paul Thomas Anderson, the evening marked a significant breakthrough. After receiving 14 previous nominations, he finally won his first Oscars, taking home Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay in the same night, becoming the ninth person in Academy history to achieve the triple victory.
Veteran actress Amy Madigan also made history with the longest gap between acting nominations, returning to the Oscars after four decades to win Best Supporting Actress for Weapons.
Other notable winners included Frankenstein, which swept several technical categories, while the animated hit KPop Demon Hunters earned two awards.
