The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that a total of 1,680,315 voters are eligible to take part in next month’s Area Councils elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mallam Aminu Idris, disclosed this in Abuja while presenting the certified voters’ register to political parties.
He explained that the presentation was in line with constitutional provisions, which require INEC to make the voters’ register available to registered political parties ahead of any election.
Mallam Idris stated that the Commission has successfully completed 10 of the 13 stages required for the conduct of the elections across the six Area Councils of the FCT.
According to him, INEC is fully prepared to conduct elections for six Chairmanship positions and 62 Councillorship seats. He added that 3,319 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines have been configured to enhance transparency and prevent voter fraud and impersonation.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner further disclosed that non-sensitive election materials have already been distributed to the six INEC Area Council offices in the FCT.
He called on leaders of political parties to partner with INEC in sensitizing their supporters on the need for peaceful conduct before, during, and after the elections.
Speaking on behalf of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Mr. Umar Yahaya commended INEC for consistently engaging stakeholders throughout the preparations for the FCT Area Councils elections.
Also speaking, representatives of various political parties urged INEC to intensify preparations to meet public expectations for a credible and transparent electoral process. They pledged to mobilize eligible voters to turn out in large numbers to participate in the polls.
