Tinubu’s Victory in 2027 Guaranteed, Regardless of INEC Chairman – APC Declares
By Lagos Reporters
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed strong confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure re-election in 2027, irrespective of who replaces Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, stated this in an interview with The Sun, emphasizing that the APC is unfazed by speculations surrounding Yakubu’s expected exit and the appointment of a successor.
Professor Yakubu’s tenure as INEC Chairman is due to conclude this year, with ongoing consultations to determine his replacement.
Dismissing insinuations that the ruling party might attempt to influence the process, Basiru argued that the APC has no constitutional role in choosing an electoral referee.
“How can you ask a player to recommend a referee? We are participants in the game, and we are not concerned about who officiates,” he said.
He explained that civil society organisations and the National Assembly, not political parties, bear the responsibility of recommending candidates for the position of INEC Chairman.
Basiru stressed that the APC’s real strength lies in its ability to mobilise voters, declaring that Tinubu’s victory is inevitable regardless of who heads the commission.
“In fact, when we mobilise, even if the new INEC Chairman is related to another party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju will still emerge victorious,” he asserted.
Lagos Reporters will continue to track developments regarding the appointment of a new INEC Chairman and the political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 elections.
