Top figures of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including Nyesom Wike and Bukola Saraki, on Saturday converged at the Velodrome of the MKO Abiola National Stadium for the party’s highly anticipated National Convention.

The gathering, described by party leaders as a “Convention of Reconciliation, Equity and Unity,” drew a large turnout of delegates, stakeholders, and party loyalists from across the country.
The presence of key political heavyweights signaled renewed efforts within the PDP to close ranks and reposition itself ahead of future electoral contests.

The convention comes at a critical time for the opposition party, which has faced internal divisions in recent years. Party leaders expressed optimism that the theme of the convention would guide deliberations toward healing rifts, promoting fairness, and strengthening unity among members.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were also present at the venue to monitor proceedings, in line with their constitutional mandate. PDP officials acknowledged the commission’s role, commending its continued commitment to deepening Nigeria’s democratic process.
Addressing delegates, several party stalwarts emphasized the need for cohesion and collective purpose, urging members to put aside differences and work toward rebuilding public trust. They noted that unity within the party remains essential for mounting a formidable opposition and offering Nigerians a credible alternative.
The convention is expected to feature key decisions on party leadership, policy direction, and strategies aimed at strengthening the PDP’s national outlook.
As proceedings continue, political observers say the outcome of the convention could shape the party’s trajectory in the lead-up to future elections, particularly as it seeks to reassert its influence on Nigeria’s political landscape.
