The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has seized no fewer than 50 vehicles during a two-hour special operation conducted along the Giri–Gwagwalada–Lokoja highway as part of efforts to enhance road safety ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities.

During the joint operation carried out with leaders of major transport unions, Corps Marshal Mallam Shehu Mohammed explained that the exercise was aimed at sensitizing motorists and enforcing traffic regulations on the busy Giri–Gwagwalada–Lokoja corridor, which is notorious for overloading of goods and passengers.

Expressing displeasure over the conduct of some drivers—especially those of articulated vehicles—the Corps Marshal ordered that excess passengers be offloaded immediately.

He explained that the corps had secured the cooperation of transport union leaders to restore discipline on the highways, adding that measures had been put in place to ensure that passengers removed from overloaded vehicles receive transport refunds to continue their journeys in other vehicles.

According to him, the leadership of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has made adequate provisions to ensure passengers are not inconvenienced.

Mallam Mohammed stressed that the corps would no longer condone what he described as the “madness and rascality” associated with overloading on Nigerian roads. He urged drivers to obey traffic regulations and fully cooperate with FRSC personnel to maintain safety throughout and beyond the festive period.

He further noted that mobile courts would operate across all 36 states and the FCT to prosecute traffic offenders during the Yuletide. Over 30,000 FRSC personnel have been deployed with sufficient logistics support for the special operations, which will run until January 2026.

RTEAN National President, Alhaji Musa Mohammed, stated that stringent measures had been introduced to curb reckless behavior among drivers. He advised travelers to use designated motor parks and revealed that a task force had been set up to monitor long-distance drivers.

The two-hour special operation was carried out in collaboration with sister security agencies to guarantee the safety of all personnel involved.
