President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has applauded the Igede Traditional Council in Benue State for sustaining the Igede Agba new yam festival, describing it as a unifying force for the Igede people at home and in the diaspora.

The President gave the commendation on Saturday during the 2025 edition of the cultural festival held in Oju Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, President Tinubu noted that the traditional institution remains a strong pillar for peace, unity, and progress, as well as a vital platform for addressing developmental and social challenges.

He particularly acknowledged the role of traditional rulers in peacebuilding efforts in conflict-prone areas, commending the Adiharu of Igede, CP Oga Ero (Rtd.), for hosting yet another successful edition of the Igede Agba festival.

Senator Akume, representing the President, conveyed Tinubu’s appreciation for the invitation extended to him to be part of the historic event. He further assured that under the Renewed Hope Agenda, all regions of the country are experiencing notable growth through strategic interventions across various sectors of the economy.

According to him, Benue State has already benefitted from the administration through key appointments and infrastructural projects, with more developments underway. “The President has asked me to announce here that the contract for the construction of the Oju-Ogoja Road has been awarded. And to whom much is given, much is expected,” Akume declared.

In his remarks, HRH Adiharu of Igede, CP Oga Ero (Rtd.), expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for honouring the invitation and for connecting Benue to the national government through the SGF and other significant appointments.

He also described the award of the Oju-Ogoja Road construction as a long-awaited relief for the people. “This road has been a nightmare to us for years until your government graciously came to our rescue,” he said, pledging the community’s support for the President and the SGF in their efforts to build a prosperous nation.

A major highlight of the event was the conferment of a chieftaincy title on President Tinubu.

Other dignitaries, including the Board Chairman of the National Agricultural Seed Council, Hon. Austin Agada, Hon. David Ogewu, and Central Planning Committee Chairman Benjamin Akobo, praised the President for appointing Igede sons into key positions such as Permanent Secretary and Director General. They also lauded the NELFUND social scheme, describing it as unprecedented.
