What started as a romantic relationship has ended in a grim tragedy, once again highlighting the devastating outcomes of unresolved conflicts and violence within intimate relationships.

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Anikpe Valentine Chibuike, in connection with the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu, a 35-year-old single mother.
The incident occurred in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Confirming the arrest in a statement released on Sunday in Awka, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) apprehended the suspect on January 7, 2026.
The police also dismissed reports circulating on social media which claimed that the deceased was killed by alleged creditors pursuing the suspect over unpaid debts. According to the command, such claims are false and misleading.
During interrogation, Chibuike reportedly admitted to stabbing the victim in the neck with a knife, an act that led to her death. The incident was said to have taken place around midnight on December 9, 2025.
Investigations revealed that the suspect claimed he acted out of suspicion of infidelity and emotional distress, allegedly stemming from financial losses he incurred while attempting to set up a business for the deceased.
He further confessed to planting a fake letter suggesting that he had been kidnapped by creditors, a move investigators believe was aimed at diverting attention and evading arrest.
Detectives have since visited the mortuary where the victim’s body was deposited, as investigations into the case continue.
The killing has sparked widespread outrage within the community and reignited public discourse on domestic violence and crimes arising from intimate relationships.
The Anambra State Police Command has urged residents to embrace lawful and peaceful ways of resolving disputes. The police also encouraged members of the public to report early signs of domestic violence to security agencies to help prevent similar tragedies.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.
