Olowo Bows Out of UNCTAD/ISAR, Earns Praise for Advancing Nigeria’s Financial Reporting Initiatives

The election of Dr. Rabiu Onaolapo Olowo, Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) of Nigeria, as President at the 41st session of UNCTAD during the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD/ISAR) in November 2024, ushered in remarkable transformation and reinforced the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the global stage.

This aligned with the Intergovernmental Working Group of Experts on International Standards of Accounting and Reporting (ISAR), which lavished commendations on the outgoing leadership of Dr. Olowo, who served as President from November 2024 to November 2025.

Dr. Olowo’s assumption of office as President of UNCTAD/ISAR in 2024 was described as the beginning of a “New Era of Global Financial Reporting Excellence,” a declaration he went on to validate through outstanding performance that exceeded global expectations.

His appointment reflected his exceptional leadership and deep expertise in corporate reporting and financial oversight at the FRC Nigeria—qualities that guided his conscientious management of the global body for one year.

Committed to fostering global collaboration among experts to improve transparency and comparability in corporate reporting, Dr. Olowo’s tenure provided a platform that showcased Nigerian competence and leadership at the highest international level, consistent with the vision of the Renewed Hope agenda.

Over the course of one year, and while also driving transformation locally for two years, Dr. Olowo played a pivotal role in shaping the global financial reporting landscape. His achievements drew admiration during the handing-over ceremony, where the body expressed profound appreciation for his exceptional service.

His vision for improved administration, enhanced transparency, and better comparability in financial reporting aligned seamlessly with the FRC’s mission to promote excellence in financial reporting and governance in Nigeria—values he projected confidently on the global stage throughout his leadership.

During his presidency at UNCTAD/ISAR, Dr. Olowo promoted unity, strengthened cooperation among nations, and introduced key initiatives and decisions that will continue to benefit the global community.

His global recognition and achievements affirmed his expertise and leadership in corporate reporting, both in Nigeria and internationally. His dedication to promoting transparency and comparability contributed significantly to unlocking capital flows locally and globally—further amplifying his impact.

Dr. Olowo’s tenure coincided with a period when Nigeria, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was preparing to appoint new envoys after earlier dissolutions. Yet, despite the diplomatic transitions, his sterling performance as UNCTAD/ISAR President stood out distinctly, reinforcing Nigeria’s profile in international engagements.

The UN event provided yet another opportunity to demonstrate to skeptics and the international community that Nigeria remains poised to showcase diplomatic and strategic competence toward advancing the objectives of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

Dr. Olowo’s leadership reaffirmed the Renewed Hope administration’s commitment to global engagement and cooperation, further demonstrating Nigeria’s diplomatic readiness and depth.
