The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has moved the local government elections in Oyo State to Tuesday, December 29, 2026.
The development was disclosed in a statement released on Tuesday by the Chairman of the commission, Babatunde Afees Adeniyi.
According to the commission, the election, which was initially fixed for Saturday, January 16, 2027, will now be conducted between 8:00 a.

m. and 3:00 p.m. on the new date in all local government areas across the state.
OYSIEC explained that the change became necessary following the adjustment of the timetable for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
INEC had earlier scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 2027 but later shifted the exercise to January 16, 2027 — the same date previously fixed for the state’s local government elections.
The commission stated that the rescheduling was intended to prevent a clash of electoral activities and to allow for smooth coordination of the election process.
“The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission hereby informs political parties, security agencies, stakeholders and the general public that the local government election earlier scheduled for Saturday, January 16, 2027, has been rescheduled to Tuesday, December 29, 2026 between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.,” the statement read.
OYSIEC urged political parties, candidates and other stakeholders to take note of the new date and begin necessary preparations ahead of the elections.
The commission also reassured residents of its readiness to conduct a credible, transparent and peaceful election across all local government areas in the state.
