Zoleka Mandela, the granddaughter of Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically iconic leader and advocate for civil rights, has sadly passed away at the age of 43 after a prolonged struggle with cancer.

The Mandela family spokesman, Zwelabo Mandela, and the Nelson Mandela Foundation officially confirmed her demise on Tuesday, casting a shadow of grief over the nation.

Zoleka’s passing occurred on the evening of Monday, September 25, while she was surrounded by her loved ones. She had been undergoing extensive treatment for metastatic cancer that had spread to various parts of her body, including her hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain, and spinal cord. The family expressed their deepest gratitude to the medical team that had tirelessly cared for her during her battle.

In recent years, Zoleka Mandela had gained recognition for her unwavering determination to share her personal fight against cancer with her nearly 600,000 Instagram followers. Additionally, she fearlessly spoke about her history of drug addiction and her struggles with depression, becoming an inspiration to many facing similar challenges.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation paid tribute to her remarkable work, stating, “The Nelson Mandela Foundation extends its heartfelt condolences to the Mandela family on the passing of Zoleka Mandela, tragically last night. Her work in raising awareness about cancer prevention and her unwavering commitment to breaking down the stigma surrounding the disease will continue to inspire us all. We mourn the loss of a beloved grandchild of Mum Winnie and Madiba and a friend of the Foundation.”

In 2013, Zoleka shared her poignant journey in her autobiography, “When Hope Whispers.” Her battle with breast cancer began at the age of 32, leading her to undergo extensive treatments, including a double mastectomy. However, cancer reemerged in 2016. It was during this challenging period that she turned to social media to document her battle, using her platform to raise awareness and encourage others to prioritize regular check-ups.

Last year, she revealed that her battle had extended to her liver and lungs, with the disease affecting other vital organs. Zoleka Mandela’s relentless spirit in the face of adversity served as a beacon of hope and courage for countless individuals grappling with cancer and personal challenges.

Born on April 9, 1980, Zoleka Mandela was not only a prominent activist but also an outspoken writer. She dedicated her life to advocating for healthcare and justice. Furthermore, her commitment to road safety activism intensified after the tragic loss of her 13-year-old daughter in a car accident near Johannesburg in 2010. She also endured the heartbreaking loss of a prematurely born son.
