Oba Rashidi Ladoja has been officially installed as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland in 2025. His ascension marks not only a cultural milestone but also a political one for Ibadan, the largest city of the Yoruba people.

1. Former Oyo State Governor
Ladoja governed Oyo State between 2003 and 2007 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
2. Elder Statesman Turned Monarch
Born on September 25, 1944, he rose to the throne at 81, bringing with him decades of political, business, and cultural experience.
3. Well-Educated Leader
He studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Liège in Belgium. In addition to his academic background, he is multilingual, fluent in French, and had a professional career before venturing into politics.

Before joining politics, he worked with multinational companies such as Total Nigeria. He later established businesses in oil, gas, and shipping.
5. Decades in the Ibadan Chieftaincy Line
His path to the throne spanned over three decades through Ibadan’s unique seniority-based succession system. Along the way, he held titles such as Jagun Olubadan, Osi Olubadan, and Otun Olubadan before finally becoming Olubadan in 2025.
6. Defender of Ibadan Tradition
In 2017, he opposed the move by then-Governor Abiola Ajimobi to elevate several chiefs to the status of “kings.” Ladoja challenged the decision in court and won, safeguarding Ibadan’s traditional system.

Ladoja ascended the throne following the death of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, who reigned from 2024 until his passing on July 7, 2025.
